Stone Mountain
The latter part of Spring Break, we traveled just east of Atlanta to take in the Stone Mountain memorial. The large mainly quartz mountain was formed along what is known as the Blue Ridge mountains. On one side is a memorial to the confederate soldiers and includes General Lee, President Davis and General Stonewall Jackson. The craving itself is bigger than Mount Rushmore, which the guide said is the memorial the original artist left Stone Mountain to complete. We took the tram ride to the top, where we were surprised to find some vegetation and a great view of the Atlanta skyline. At the base of the mountain was a little village of outdoor activities, including a large-scale rope climbing course, rock climbing, an obstacle course, zip lines and some unique stores. The kids especially liked the glass blower and the homemade confections. It was a nice weekend getaway destination.
